RECN is three words.
An idea arrives once, and rarely at a good time. What happens to it next is the whole app: you record it, you reckon with it, and your devices reconcile it. Everything RECN does is one of those three.

The recorder should never be why you lost the idea. So it is one press or one shortcut away, the sound goes to disk as it arrives, and nothing you play is thrown away: not the take you replaced, not the part you trimmed off.

Recording
Press record and the audio goes straight to a file, with a meter and a live waveform while it runs.
Audio is written into the file as it is captured, on every platform, with a level meter and a waveform drawing beside it. Nothing waits in memory for you to press stop, so a take runs as long as the free space does.

Record without opening RECN
RECN can sit in the menu bar or tray and record from a keyboard shortcut, with no window in the way.
RECN can keep running with no window, as a menu bar item on a Mac or a tray item on Windows. The hotkey reaches the same recorder the app window uses, writes to disk as it captures, and drops the take straight into your library.

Layered sessions
Record over what you already have, and every pass keeps its own track and its own place in time.
The lanes you have play back while the new pass records onto a lane of its own. RECN anchors it to the frame of the session clock you played it on, less the input’s own latency. The source recordings are never rewritten.

Takes
Record the part again and the take you replaced stays on the track, one menu away.
Recording over a track stacks a new take on the same lane instead of overwriting anything. One take is active, the one you hear, and the rest wait in the track’s menu. With the loop armed, each lap is committed as its own take.

Editing clips
Move, trim, split and mute the pieces of a session, with the crossfades worked out for you.
A clip is a window onto an audio file, not a copy. Trimming moves the window’s edges, splitting makes two windows onto the same file, and dragging changes when it plays. Where two clips overlap, the crossfade is derived from the overlap, never stored.

Loop, punch and markers
Cycle a section until it is right, record over a fixed range, and name the places you keep coming back to.
A loop is a range on the ruler the playhead wraps around. A punch range is a second pair of points where recording is allowed: playback runs either side and only what falls inside is kept. Markers are named flags on the same ruler.

Saving and exporting
Hand the whole session over as one file, or render it to WAV or AAC.
An export sends every lane through its level, pan and mutes and renders new audio: a mixdown, one file per track, or both, in WAV or AAC. Saving a copy instead wraps the arrangement and all of its audio into a single .recn file.

To reckon is to remember, and to work something out. A recording you cannot find is a recording you do not have, so the words sit beside the sound: notes that hold the recording itself, comments pinned to the second, transcripts made on the phone, and one search across all of it.

Write beside the sound, in a note where the recording itself is one of the blocks.
A note is a column of blocks you stack in any order: text, headings, lists, to-dos, images. One of them can be a recording, and that block is the library item itself rather than a copy, so it plays where it sits.

Drawing canvas
A whiteboard for shapes, lines, text and sketches that lives in the library like everything else.
Everything on the canvas is stored as an object, not as pixels: a stroke is its points, a box carries its own label, a connector remembers where it bends. Move the box and the bend follows. Each shape merges on its own.

Timeline markers
Pin a short comment to an exact moment in a recording and see it come back as you play past it.
A marker is not a note about a file. It is a time in milliseconds stored on the recording, with its text and one of six colours. Play past that time and the comment surfaces on the waveform by itself.

Transcription
Speech becomes text on the phone itself, and the transcript then follows the recording to your other devices.
The speech model runs on the iPhone or iPad itself, reading audio that never leaves the device. Out come lines of text, each with its own start and end time. Only that text syncs onward; the desktop shows transcripts, it does not make them.

Projects
Folders that hold takes, notes, sessions and drawings, and that can sit inside each other three levels deep.
A project is a folder that can sit inside another, three levels deep, holding takes, notes, sessions and drawings. Filing something changes one field on it: which project it belongs to. The audio file on disk is not copied and does not move.

A recording is amber until a verified copy sits on every device you have paired, then green. The audio travels in pieces that are checked as they land, so a dropped connection resumes where it stopped rather than starting over.

Pairing is one introduction: a Mac shows a code, a phone scans it, and both sides confirm. The code carries a node id, a relay and a one-time token good for five minutes. What you get is a trust edge, with no account in it.

The desktop app
A real Mac and Windows app, with a three-column shell, keyboard shortcuts, multi-select and right-click menus.
One window with a navigation rail, the library, whatever is selected, and a player along the bottom. Click, Shift-click and Command-click pick a range of rows, and a right-click acts on the whole selection, so the menu says how many it will move or delete.

Staying up to date
The desktop app updates itself, and your phone tells you when a new build is out and what changed in it.
A computer asks the release feed once a day, pulls the build in the background while you watch the percentage, checks its signature and swaps it in on relaunch, never mid-recording. A phone sees the newer build and hands you to TestFlight or Play.

Private by default
No account and no hosted library. Your recordings live on your devices, and crash reports have an off switch.
Your devices talk to each other and to nothing else. There is no account to create and no hosted library. One thin line does leave: crash and error reports, on by default, with a switch in Settings that cuts it.
