Recordings, notes, and files
RECN stores the audio you record or import, notes, attached images, transcripts, projects, and settings on your device. Metadata can include file names, timestamps, recording settings, and device information. You do not need a RECN account to use the app.
Recording uses microphone access. Features you choose may also use camera or photo access to attach images, audio-library access to import recordings, Bluetooth access for audio devices, and notifications for recording and playback controls. You can manage these permissions in your device settings.
Transcription processes audio on your device. Downloading a transcription model connects to Hugging Face, which receives the network information needed to serve that download, such as your IP address. The model download does not upload your recording.
Sync and sharing
If you pair devices, RECN uses local-network discovery and peer-to-peer connections to exchange your library and related metadata with those devices. Device identifiers and names help identify paired devices. RECN does not provide a hosted cloud recording library.
Exporting or sharing sends the files you select to the app, person, or destination you choose. Those destinations handle the copies under their own practices. Your operating system may also back up app data, depending on your device and backup settings.
Usage stats
Release builds send usage stats to PostHog, on its EU cloud, so we can see how many people use RECN and which features they use. Usage stats are on by default. They include the name you typed during setup, a random id made on this install, an opaque tag shared by your paired devices, how many devices you have paired, your device type, operating system, and app version, and events such as "a recording was saved" or "a note was created". They never include recordings, notes, transcripts, titles, file names, search text, or device names. What RECN sends lists every event and property.
One switch controls usage stats and crash reports together: Share crash reports and usage stats in the app's Settings under Privacy. Turning it off stops both immediately and deletes the install's random id, so turning it back on starts a new id that is not linked to the old one. PostHog receives your network address as part of receiving each request; RECN tells it not to look up a location from that address, and adds no location of its own.
Crash and error reports
Release builds use Sentry to help diagnose crashes and errors. Crash reporting is on by default and is turned off by the same Share crash reports and usage stats switch.
Reports can contain app and operating-system versions, device characteristics, diagnostic identifiers, stack traces, and recent technical logs. Logs may include file names, local paths, or device and connection details. RECN removes home-directory prefixes from outgoing Dart error text and logs, but this is not a guarantee that every diagnostic field is anonymous. Native crash reports are handled by Sentry's native SDK.
Recordings, note documents, and photos are not intentionally attached to crash reports. RECN disables Sentry's default personal-information collection and performance tracing. Sentry still processes the network information needed to receive reports. Turning reporting off stops future reporting; it does not automatically remove reports already received.
This website and support
The website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub processes requests to deliver pages and downloads. The site stores your selected colour theme in your browser's local storage.
If you sign up for updates, your email address is submitted to Formspree so we can send RECN updates. If you email support, we receive your email address, message, and any attachments you choose to send. Please avoid sending private recordings or other sensitive information unless needed for your request.
RECN does not include advertising or an advertising SDK. We use the information described here to provide the requested features, respond to support requests, send requested updates, and diagnose problems.
Retention and deletion
Your local library remains on your devices until you delete it or remove the app's data. You can delete recordings and notes in RECN. Check paired devices, exported files, and operating-system backups separately: deleting the app or a local copy does not necessarily remove those other copies. Device identity stored in secure storage may survive an app reinstall.
Crash reports and usage stats are kept under the retention settings of the Sentry and PostHog projects. Turning sharing off does not delete what was already sent. Support messages are kept to handle and follow up on your request, and update-signup details are kept while you want to receive updates. Email us to request deletion of support or signup information, to stop updates, or to ask about a crash report or usage stats. Because RECN has no account, we may need details such as the name you typed during setup to find your data.
We cannot retrieve or remotely delete a library stored only on your device. There is no RECN account to close.
Teen users
RECN is intended for people aged 13 and over, including teenagers. It is not directed at children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us personal information, contact us so we can investigate and remove it where applicable.
Service providers and changes
The services mentioned above may process information in countries other than yours. Their privacy information is available from Sentry, PostHog, GitHub, Formspree, and Hugging Face. Google Play, Apple, and any apps you use to share files have their own privacy practices.
